31 Club

It’s my last weekend off, and it’s the Superbowl. Football is not my thing but I’ve got a really terrible feed playing through my Roku as I rest up before going back to my normal job. I spent most of the week recovering from a 24-ish hour bug. I haven’t really been sick as an adult, and wow-ee, it’s terrible. I couldn’t really enjoy last week’s Buffalo Soup Fest, then felt just tired and dehydrated for another 3 days.

But I feel back to normal now, so it was time for brunch! This weekend we tried 31 Club on Elmwood. J had been there many many years ago, and didn’t care for it, but we figured we’d give it a shot for brunch.

We had a hard time deciding what to order, as there were several very enticing options, but he settled with the Lobster Scramble and I ordered the Huevos Rancheros.

And of course, a bloody mary.

The offering from 31 Club

The offering from 31 Club

Served in a pint glass for $8 this is a very standard, straightforward bloody. Garnished with a celery stalk, lemon, lime and olive I ordered it spicy and it came with a ton of cracked pepper in it. The heat level was purely from a vinegar based hot sauce like Frank’s. The drink was pretty liquidy, and that hot sauce flavor was the only thing you could taste. Mediocre at best, I wouldn’t ever go out of my way to have another.

But my breakfast, on the other hand, was probably the best breakfast I’ve ever had.

Oh my Yum!

Oh my Yum!

Over easy eggs, on top of andouille sausage in the little tortilla cups, with tomato and corn relish, and spiced potatoes. Holy crap, it was seriously delicious and over easy eggs aren’t my favorite usually. So even though their bloody mary was meh, I’d most definitely return since the food was so good.

The Oshun called, they’re running out of shrimp…

It was brunch time on Sunday, this time trying out Oshun, a place I never thought I’d ever go. I’ve mentioned how I don’t get along well with seafood, so a restaurant who’s known mainly for their seafood menu wasn’t high up on my list of places to go. Enter Groupon. Oshun had a $25 brunch Groupon which included 2 entrees, 2 alcoholic drinks, and 2 non-alcoholic drinks. I double checked their brunch menu to make sure it wasn’t all seafood, and picked it up. Seemed like a good deal to me!

So we checked it out today, because it was snowing, and we always go out to brunch in the best weather.

My weather app said “light snow”, a glance out the window showed it was indeed snowing, but we had no idea how much until we left the house. We easily had 4 inches, and it was coming down fast and heavy. Visibility while driving was poor, everything was just white. I guess we weren’t going to need those reservations we made!

The gorgeous Electric Tower

When I was working downtown I always admired the empty storefront that turned into Oshun, and it’s pretty and art deco inside to match. Their brunch menu is small, and it does feature a lot of seafood, but they had a few options with land dwelling meats and J and I both chose the cinnamon french toast entrees, with eggs and bacon. It was tasty, and huge!

But what about the Bloody?

The menu listed the drink at $8 with a shrimp garnish. It arrived in a high ball glass with a lime wedge…no shrimp. Initially I had forgotten what the menu said, and just generally thought they could improve their garnish game quite a bit. Once I realized there was supposed to be a shrimp, I felt cheated, and I don’t even like shrimp! No one else seemed to be getting any shrimp with their drinks either, so it didn’t seem to be a cheat move since we were using a groupon, but maybe they just don’t do it for brunch. *Shrug*

The mix had a good flavor, with a strong umami taste, and I thought it might have been made with Clamato or had some sort of seafood taste added (Asian fish sauce maybe?) even though it wasn’t advertised as a Caesar. There was visible pepper and horseradish in the drink, but there was no overwhelming horseradish flavor to it. It was definitely very spicy though, with no vinegar flavor, so it’s not clear what kind of hot sauce was used.

Overall it was a very good drink, despite the lack of shrimp or other garnishes. It could definitely be improved with some tasty edibles on top, and maybe even make it into the Best of category. Step up your garnish game Oshun!

Dick and Jenny’s

I finally got a new phone! Hooray. I had been using a Motorola Mini, and I upgraded to an HTC One M9. I was looking forward to a new phone with a new camera, that hopefully would take better low light images, such as inside bars, while drinking Bloody Marys…

I finally got to try a new place and had my first official Bloody Mary of the year. I went out with my parents to Dick and Jenny’s restaurant on Grand Island, NY. Moving to Grand Island after Hurricane Katrina, they opened a New Orleans themed restaurant based on their previous restaurant in Louisiana. Mom and I decided to both try their Bloody Mary.

Served in a pint glass with a Cajun spiced rim, their Bloody Mary was garnished with a pickled green bean, pickled okra, lime wedge and a skewer of an olive, onion and…pickled grape? I just thought it was another olive until Mom pointed out it was a grape. What?? It definitely looked like a grape on second glance, the thought of it pickled grossed me out but she assured me they were good. It was not good. And when she ate hers, she said maybe it wasn’t a grape. It definitely did not have the texture of a grape, nor the taste. So we have no idea what it really was, but whatever it was, I did not enjoy it.

I set it up to photograph, and took several terrible photos with my new phone. ARRRGG. I’ve had it for about 2 months now, it seems to work decently, but I could not get a decent photo so I had to use my Dad’s iphone.

New Orleans Bloody!

New Orleans Bloody!

A bit watery, the drink had plenty of visible spice. The heat mostly came from horseradish, but it had a tad of some sort of hot sauce flavor to it. It wasn’t overwhelmingly spicy though, and there was no after burn. It had a good taste and was drinkable but not mind blowing.

Brunch tomorrow!

What the…??

I don’t know if I should be excited or bummed.

The first Buffalo Bloody Mary Festival sold out last week.

I’m excited because that’s totally awesome. That means there are lots and lots of Bloody Mary enthusiasts in Buffalo, and hopefully this festival will continue and grow in the coming years.

I’m bummed though because it’s almost a guarantee that none of my friends who were going to attend with me bought tickets in time.

I’m super glad I bought mine right away though. I was going to wait and see. Thank god I didn’t! I’d be so mad if I was going to miss it.

In other news, I was given a few new Bloody Mary things to try for Christmas, including some special vodka direct from Berlin, Germany. My collection of mixes continues to grow, I really should get on top of that…

Buffalo Bloody Mary Fest!!

When I started this blog I started fantasizing of starting an annual Bloody Mary fest in Buffalo, modeled off of the ones occurring in other parts of the country. I am usually unable to make it to one of the other cities because my job requires me to book my vacation time in November for the next year, and the festivals usually don’t have solid dates at that time. It makes me sad. And jealous. Very jealous.

So I’d lay in bed and think about how to start a festival of my own. I’d day dream about sending letters to various restaurants asking them to participate…how to find a panel of “experts” to judge the drinks…publicity…booking a venue…what time of year to do it…everything.

But I’m lazy. So it just stayed a day dream.

Then I see a friend post on my facebook wall that the first annual Buffalo Bloody Mary festival is coming up. My first thought, “Hey that’s what I wanted to start!” My second thought, “Now I have way less work to do, and more time to enjoy it!” Hooray Step Out Buffalo for…um…stepping up and stealing my brain waves and turning them into reality, without me having to do any actual work. I’m down with it!

Save the date! March 6, 2016 at the wonderful Shea’s Performing Arts Theatre on Main St in Buffalo. For $30 (early bird price until January 31st) you get admission, brunch bites from local restaurants, and bloody mary taste testing from 10 local restaurants known for their bloodies. And if you hate bloody mary’s (gtfo!) or are the designated driver, there is a $10 admission ticket, which covers admission only but no bloodies (there is a cash bar though).

Since I have nothing to do with this festival I can’t fault their restaurant choices, however my personal favourite (so far) has been left off the list. Poor Merge. Ah well, perhaps they will get unseated at the top of my list by some of these other restaurants I have not tried yet.

I’m so excited!!

The Hayburner Bloody

I’ve been working at my job forever, and to reward me for my unending loyalty (LOL) I get 4 weeks of vacation. It sounds like a fantastic thing, 4 whole weeks off! I love traveling but I find it hard to use all my time because 1. none of my friends have that much time off 2. it’s very hard to coordinate schedules to travel with my friends 3. it’s so expensive! So J and I try to take 2 weeks off together, I take my 3rd week at random usually in the spring, and that 4th week I have a hard time using. Add to that, I keep going on special assignment at work for 10-12 weeks at a time, which means I can’t really use my vacation at that time, I end up running out of year to use up my days. So I’ve started taking single days off, to extend my “weekend”, but again, all my friends are at work and I end up with nothing to do! So I went to dinner with my parents.

They wanted to go somewhere “new” that they hadn’t been to before, and my dad is a beer fan, so I suggested Big Ditch Brewing Company. (“Big Ditch” was the working name of the Erie Canal when it was being built in the early 1800s.) Their beer is pretty good, and their food was tasty the previous 2 times I’d been there.

Big Ditch!

Big Ditch!

My mom ordered the Dark Fall seasonal black German style beer, and my dad ordered a flight of 5, but I’ve tasted most of their beers before (except the Jalapeno Cream Ale that was a small batch special which was already sold out by the time we made it there on our last trip!) so I didn’t feel required to order beer. I never noticed that they offered a Bloody Mary made with their IPA before, so this time I had to get it.

The Hayburner Bloody

The Hayburner Bloody

The Hayburner Bloody is served in a pint glass for $9 and is made with their Hayburner IPA. Garnished with an olive, pepperoncini, pickled carrot, celery, and pickled something else…cauliflower maybe? It was just the stem of something, and bit tough so my mom and I couldn’t really figure it out. Pepper and horseradish was clearly visible in the house made mix, and it had a definite horseradish flavor to it but it was not overly spicy. Given that it was made with an IPA I expected a beer taste and some citrus-y bitterness to the drink, but there really wasn’t any, you might not realize it was made with beer at all. It was nice and drinkable without being overwhelming.

We ordered the flight of dips which is really good, and I had the ridiculously huge bacon mac and cheese. It’s delicious, but it could serve 4 people, so be prepared to take home leftovers. Not that that’s a bad thing!

A Bloody Mary with a Saigon Kick

Driving down Elmwood Avenue late the other night, we passed Saigon Cafe at their new location and took note of their big banner advertising Saturday and Sunday brunch. $4 Thai Bloody Mary you say? Gimme! I say.

A few of Saigon Cafe's drink offerings.

A few of Saigon Cafe’s drink offerings.

I first went to Saigon Cafe at their old location on a business lunch in 2003 – a lunch that would see me involved with a non-profit for the next ten years, so I’d say it was a success. I had never had Thai food though and at that time I was a very non-adventurous eater so I was terrified. I can’t remember what I had, some kind of soup, but I remember asking my Thai friend for suggestions on what was “safe” beforehand. Thanks to all my Asian friends, and all their delicious home cooking, I love Asian food now!

Thai Bloody Mary!

Thai Bloody Mary!

Featuring Absolut Peppar vodka, wasabi paste, soy sauce, fish sauce and chili garlic sauce, this is one good bloody mary. I asked for it spicy, and it did not disappoint. Woo boy, I couldn’t tell if my dumplings were spicy or not because I was burned out from my drink. Garnished with your standard 2 olives and a lemon, there was a bit of sweetness to the drink that was really nice. It had a good liquidity and a nice tomato flavor, with no overpowering wasabi taste (though I wouldn’t mind! I only eat sushi for the wasabi). It’s just different enough to make it stand out and make it a drink I’d return for.

Coconut waffles - I was not expecting them to be green.

Coconut waffles – I was not expecting them to be green.

J ordered shrimp fried rice, we sort of split a pork dumpling dish that didn’t seem very dumpling like but it was really good, and I had the coconut waffles. Despite a bit of a delay in my waffles (they kept burning them apparently), overall I’d say it was a good meal and definitely a good Bloody.

Going Loco in the (716)

Heeeyy. It’s been a while. I know, I’m sorry. Honestly I really haven’t gotten out anywhere new lately. It’s summer, it’s hot, and sadly when it’s hot out, I am not usually feeling the Bloody Mary. You have to admit, it feels like more of a winter drink, especially when you have summer cocktail menus filled with nice refreshing citrus-y drinks. But I still love you dear Bloody Mary.

In fact, I love you so much you get a two-fer!

My long-not-lost friend Adrienne (21 years of friendship we just realized! Gah, old!) was in town from Las Vegas for the month with her new baby and husband, so J and I took the opportunity to take them out to the revitalized Canalside area for some food and trivia. We decided on dinner at (716) as we had eaten from their truck but not the restaurant yet. (716) is a sports themed restaurant inside HarborCenter, the Pegula built state of the art, world class hockey center directly in front of the Sabres arena. Of course they had a few Sabres themed drinks, which Adrienne had to get, and a big menu of other delicious sounding non Sabres themed offerings as well. At first glance I didn’t even notice they had a Bloody Mary, and I ordered the Berry Basil Lemonade, which was delicious. Then I noticed they had a drink called Up North – a Bloody Mary. But like I said, it’s summer, and I just wasn’t feeling it.

However, after dinner and trivia (we dominated the 2nd game with 5000 points!), we parted ways and J and I headed back to (716) with a different friend and I felt obligated.

Up North, eh?

Up North, eh?

The drink was available as a Caesar as well, but bleeeech, no thanks.

This is how I feel every time I hear "clamato"

This is what I think of every time I hear “clamato”

Garnished with a pickled carrot, blue cheese stuffed celery and a Weber’s pepperoncini, and spiced up with Frank’s Hot Sauce it had a good tomato taste even if it was a bit watery. It had a good spice level and somehow managed to avoid having too much Frank’s taste. It was nothing special though, and with so many other drinks on the menu that sounded good, I’d go with something else next time.

The next day, after a quick trip to Sticky Lips in Rochester to see The Healing Committee, we headed back to Buffalo for some margaritas at Cantina Loco. Cantina Loco opened a few years ago in Allentown and is delicious! They have the best margaritas in Buffalo, and as we found out, a huge menu of other drinks as well, including the Atomic Mary.

God, that's a terrible photo.

God, that’s a terrible photo.

Available with vodka or tequila (I go for vodka, always) for $8 in a pint glass, their house made mix was garnished with an olive and banana pepper ring, with a chili powder rim. It was fairly thin but had a ton of visible spice to it, and boy, was it spicy. It had a strange flavor that I can only call “burned celery” which I didn’t like, and there was virtually no tomato taste, as it was overwhelmed with the spice and celery taste. My initial reaction was that I didn’t like it. That I really didn’t like it. So much so that I didn’t think I’d be able to drink it. But it got better as I went on and I feel like maybe I am being unfair. Maybe because I had just had a margarita, and all I really wanted was another margarita, it was too much of a flavor shock. I really want to love Bloody Marys with a house made mix because they took the time and effort to make it, and not just use a bottle from the store. But I definitely would stick with one of the many margaritas they offer in the future.

Lloyd brunch at Buffalo Proper

We’re on vacation! And you know what that means…rain! And cold! J and I have been traveling together for 3 years now, and every vacation we take is so terribly timed for one reason or another that it’s getting a bit ridiculous.

1. Boston in May- flight out canceled due to ridiculous storms between Buffalo and Boston that could not be flown through.
2. New Orleans for Halloween – 3 days of extreme heat, then a 30 degree temperature drop while at dinner one night, making it too cold to go outside during the Witches Ball, and our flight home getting canceled because of Hurricane Sandy.
3. Las Vegas in January for a wedding – unseasonably cold weather which required mild winter coats.
4. Adirondacks for Memorial Day – 3 days of monsoon rain, the river we were staying along flooded, it was 30 degrees and 6 feet of snow fell on Whiteface Mountain. Our friend hadn’t brought any pants so we had to go into town to buy her some.
5. Chicago in the fall – required a winter coat and there were snowflakes.
6. NYC for Hedwig and the Angry Inch in May – flight home canceled due to storms between NYC and Buffalo.
7. Adirondacks for Memorial Day again – because it couldn’t be worse than the previous year. But then it rained again for 2 days. We hiked in the rain anyway, and at least it was warmer.
8. NYC for Hedwig again in December – ….actually, we had no problem with that trip, however we were so terrified of there being a problem and missing the show we drove instead of flew, since even if it was a blizzard I could keep driving and make it.
9. NYC for Hedwig AGAIN in March – drove through terrible sleet and snow to get there, then heavy snow through NY and NJ on the way home.

Bringing us up to this vacation. We had no real plans other than doing some outdoor activities around Buffalo, like kayaking, and the awesome Sky Ride (19 mile bike ride that includes a trip over the Skyway, super cool). But then we decided to go out to Seneca Lake and Watkins Glen tomorrow for a few days, and as soon as I booked the accommodations the weather forecast turned to crap. It’s like they knew, “Oh, Sara booked a trip, time to make it shit-tastic!” So we’re looking at temps in the 50s and rain at least Monday. I expect nothing less at this point.

Since the weather went to crap and it’s poured all day today, what better time to get brunch from a food truck! Cuz that’s how we do it when we’re cursed with terrible vacation weather luck.

Lloyd Taco Truck was Buffalo’s first food truck, and I was so so SO excited when they opened up. I had only recently been introduced to the food truck phenomenon, and even though some people are totally grossed out by the idea of eating food from a truck, I thought it was great. But with Buffalo being truckless at the time, I had gone as far as Columbus Ohio with a friend, specifically to get some Mexican food from a truck. Then Lloyd appeared and it was glorious. 2 years ago work put me on special assignment downtown, where Lloyd parked each Friday, and the tomatillo pork burrito was the highlight of my week (especially when work was reimbursing my expenses!) Lloyd is delicious, and have since expanded to 4 (!!!) trucks, plus they appeared on an MSNBC show to win capital to start a brick and mortar restaurant, which is supposed to be opening this year. Because of Lloyd, the Buffalo food truck scene exploded, we might be up to 20 different trucks now!

Lloyd started advertising a Sunday brunch in conjunction with the restaurant Buffalo Proper but I didn’t really know how it worked. Buffalo Proper is fairly new, having opened in the old Laughlins some time last year. The menu is fancier than I usually eat, and they have an artisan cocktail menu that looks pretty good, but I had not been there yet. For brunch I assumed you ordered food from the truck and the restaurant was nice enough to let you sit and eat, while hoping you ordered beverages from them. But it was even better than that, which was definitely helpful today, with the craptastic weather and all.

IMG_20150531_141749168

J and I ordered the k-uevos rancheros and churro french toast with a side of crispy potatoes, and it turns out they give you a number which you tell the hostess, and the hostess will then bring the order right to you in the restaurant! We didn’t even have to wait outside for the food! Hooray!

IMG_20150531_142547969

But what about the Bloody? This isn’t a brunch blog, after all.

IMG_20150531_142657055

$10 and served in a rocks glass, their Bloody Mary is made with vodka, lemon and Employees Only mix, and garnished with an olive and big basil leaf. Another Buffalo brunch blog/instagram claims that Buffalo Proper squeezes their own tomatoes for the mix but…it says right on the menu that they use Employees Only mix. I’ve never had the mix before, but I’m thinking the taste of the drink is coming right from the mix with little to no additives. It was very spicy, but it was unclear from what, and you could see all sorts of “debris” in it – like little tomato seeds. The mix is supposed to have horseradish in it, but I couldn’t taste it at all. It had a decent fresh flavor, definitely drinkable, but not over the top. I’m not sure I’d go out of my way to buy the Employee Only mix, and thankfully now I know, since it’s a bit spendy.

So we’re off for our mini vacation, and I’m hoping to stop by Finger Lakes Distilling who supposedly make their own Bloody Mary mix!

Mother’s Day Brunch…with no mothers

Happy Mother’s Day! Hope all the moms had a lovely day today.

J and I headed to brunch for the 3rd week in a row!! We checked another restaurant off the list, this time it was Betty’s. I have been to Betty’s a few times for meals, but never for a Bloody Mary, so the place had been on my list to revisit for a while. I was a bit nervous about how long we’d have to wait, given that it was Mother’s Day and all, but despite the many parties waiting, we were seated right away. Sometimes it pays to be only 2 people. That’s right, we went to brunch on Mother’s Day without either of our moms.

After several compliments on my David Bowie shirt, I ordered my drink, and found out they couldn’t serve me until after noon, which was 17 minutes away. I didn’t realize the Sunday time requirements for purchasing alcohol in NY applied to restaurants, especially ones that served brunch, but there you go. I had to wait 17 minutes for my drink.

IMG_20150510_115639306

Served in a pint glass for $7.50, the drink was garnished with a lemon, lime, onion, and olive skewer and a celery stalk. It was more liquidy than most, but had a good tomato flavor. It had a lot of visible horseradish and thus a significant horseradish taste, but it wasn’t spicy beyond the horseradish. I realized I have been forgetting to ask for my Bloodies to be spicy lately, so my guess is they add spice when requested. It was a good basic bloody, definitely drinkable.

IMG_20150510_120204365

I had my best meal of the 3 weeks in their “hangover cure” chilaquiles – a sort of Mexican egg lasagna – despite the fact we were taking my mom for Mexican for dinner. J had the waffles with strawberries special. Overall a nice yummy breakfast.
